Mombasa Street Food Tour in Kenya


We chose this fish it is double fried now here we go Oh today we're in Mombasa Kenya's second largest city smack on the east coast of Africa there's a phrase that says Mombasa haha which means the Funzone party comes he'll hang out being situated along a trade route has made Mombasa incredibly diverse a blend of different cultures religions and of course today Kenny and local Wendy is joining me as we explore moon bosses laid-back beaches and fast-paced streets if you want to eat you advise and is stunned by the side of the road and eat Jesus but not everything is sunshine and cassava chips they're supposed to be someone Manning this grill you see how there's no one by the grill the guy who said he was gonna help us wasn't exactly a licensed restaurant or witness as the best ever food reviews show faces its biggest foodie fail yet a disaster you'll have to wait until the end of this video to see so jump on board and pack your appetite we're taking on street food in boom basa oh good morning everybody right beside me is some street food right oh don't you hear did you build this could you build me a Shack it's a nice Shack 


you can build one for you if you win it's got good ventilation he's got a kitchen in back and then he's got a counter in front to display the goods for everyone to enjoy cassava preparation is simple toss them in deep oil and count to about 900 then display it proudly on your counter front for all the world to see cut it open yeah so you have this it's like chili salt right yeah tea and soleus mixture how much cheese do you want okay that one's for you now this point ours now for you and then some line and you're good to go all right I'm gonna make my own and guys it's just like so split it open like a taco a little bit of chilli salt and then this line I don't know I'm like I don't think this line that's a lot of life left in it thank you you know when you say tackle yeah deca means us so you say my taco it's like but you know what taco yeah okay so we have our cassava here I'm very excited this is kind of our breakfast for today let's go for it mmm I love Java I'm very dry though very dry the outside is not crispy it's just kind of leathering the flavors are good 


but then you got to wash it down with this soda they don't have any drinks here people they're just eating it like this most people like adding a lot of lime to it as well for the flavor and also to make it a little moist super energy packed food it's just like incredibly dense and starchy it's a perfect way to fill yourself up for cheap just next door another super local cookery preps for breakfast do you hear that that is fish frying up over here we got all these healing fish parts and looks like it's a mackerel I had mackerel in Japan this is basically the same preparation all I know is I was told we have to be very fast while eating this put it on the platter mine effing God maybe not what do you got here hello this shine the owner has been doing this for 10 years and locals keep coming back for the food and her hospitality to the left of her kitchen her dining I'm gonna try some of this fried mackerel thank you very much all right 


we I think we connected did you guys feel it we had a moment well day-before-yesterday started out like any other today's breakfast some chapati flatbread one order of fried mackerel and her specialty beans mixed with coconut milk we got our homey sitting next to us so hello guys guys life is a thrilling adventure or else it's nothing at all and there's nothing in between and right now check out all this food Japan teas beans with coconut milk fried fish and then we've got the Mendoza my hungry my Hummer II almost like I'm in bazi but in mind I didn't even say it says coconut milk and cut it off we've got this delicious fried bread I'm gonna break it open it's like a little pocket we wanted to put food into its home I wanna make like a little bean ice cream cones that what you would really do yeah you could do that or you could just pick it up like this you ready yeah jump that's right hmm 


I love the Pokemon coconut is used in a lot of dishes that the questions you've probably seen right now it's like a perfect supplement yeah for every kind of extra seasoning or a dimension of flavor to it I love it and we got chapati it's just like an eating utensil yeah yeah I love that check it out go for it hmm who's my favorite combination ever enterprise-e and beans oh I love it we got fish here the skin is still on which is fine you didn't eat the skin okay put it in each body yes you can the best chapati a fish it's a fish it's basically a Kenyan fish taco at this point exactly let's go for it hmm hmm Crispin it's just salty in itself I don't think any salt has been added fried up it's just crispy on the outside hmm my fish is really good mm-hmm there's a chicken look at that the chickens eating some food that's fun pockety mark this place has everything out front a local transportation hub 


where locals jump in and out of brightly painted and adorned full-size pants and where there's people there is food there's so much going on so much noise so much Commerce people trying to sell me everything and then we have it upon this a street food I did not expect to find I've seen this in Malaysia in Malaysia there is called Martha Beck this purveyor of all things yummy learn to make this so-called pizza in Zanzibar a city in nextdoor Tanzania here they call it society pizza Swahili pizza yeah I like it this is how you make Swahili pizza start with dough made with wheat flour and water toss the dough are kind of slammed the dough like a roti until it becomes thin layer in this Carvey little square to prevent leakage dump on minced beef mixed with onion tumeric and an egg and then mix that all up he folds it up like a little sandwich and then he throws it on here and that my friends a Swahili Pete he cuts it into these bite-sized pieces oh we got some sides here some onion cabbage with a little bit of tomato sauce on top and that my friends looks absolutely stunning it is so hot it's kind of like a quiche wrapped in a bread almost all right let's go for it oh it's simple like just four ingredients but the beef and the onion it's enough men this place is bumpin look behind us it's the Obama car is there a Trump van around here 


oh I don't think so oh no one messes with Trump here okay got it for being so simple I really love it the meat is cut in one cinnamon your action guys by the way it's about a thousand degrees outside right now all right let's try another one well tomato sauce this is good I love it no joke I can eat like two of these for dinner next up Magento market to a bender who's been cranking out the goods for the last 20 years what's more special than the fish is the journey they took to get here what looks like tilapia it's a freshwater fish it has to be exported from western Kenya so people love this so much and even though we're right next door to the ocean they're like can you bring the lake fish over here Wow the owner and his family came from a small town near Lake Victoria and he brought along his tasty freshwater tilapia recipe this place has a whole operation behind us there's a dark scaling room 


I don't know why scaling rooms always need to be tart and a little bit creepy on the outside we've got crates of these fish frying them in dozens of different pans there's probably like a thousand fried fish out here is this your place what do you recommend how do we choose press on the size and it depends on your money also small sizes haha 100 cookies we have P one for $404 yeah 400 but it's really big we should get that one huh yeah let's get that was good can I have this one since you are from this region near Lake Victoria you must be salivating oh here we go Oh My lordy look at this that looks very nice all right let's try them reminds me of your home yeah it's very crunchy on the outside and super heavy mmm everybody gets better it's so simple but so yummy what are you the best part about this fish what is it the brain yeah show me just break this apart that's it oh that's always a bottom jaw it's the brain and this is the what's up door area you can't just pour anything out of their head and call it a brain it is a brain ball right I'm dropping brain everywhere drop your knowledge and this is the best part yeah that's the best part all right let's ride oh oh mega crunch like the bones are crunchy and the brain 


I don't feel any brain well you know it could be in there to leave Mombasa without stopping by the beach would defeat the purpose of coming in the first place this is a hip and happening coastal city they work hard and here at the beach they play hard is that a camel oh yeah we have commas in the beach all the time it's the most natural thing yeah ever this is jomo kenyatta public beach that is Friday today so it's like chill time fun time there's a face that says Mombasa raha which means it's fun you know it's a fun zone party comes in and out fun this is perfect I love pond we just need to mix in a little bit of food and we are set when we arrived some eager young gentlemen struck up a deal to help bring this fun to fruition guaranteeing a Kenyan beachside barbecue like no other that was two hours ago it's in newspaper oh I only had frozen ones frozen lobster 


guys scared to tell you what's going on we're trying to do a scene so we come to the beach they used to sell seafood they don't sell seafood they're losing money on seafood they sell cassava but meanwhile these guys in the parking lot we're gonna do anything their hustle and then they're like you want a barbecue we'll make a barbecue they got a seafood they got us frozen lobsters we've been waiting for the fire you see how there's no one by the grill the guy who said he was going to help us wasn't exactly a licensed restaurant Tory is just a guy this wouldn't be such a big deal except the Sun is about to set behind the palm trees and we didn't bring our flashlights in here we have a king fish check it out guys educate fish how long do you think that takes to come over like 40 minutes is there any ending for this video all right guys we did our best sunny why did you put this video out even though it's not finished I don't know cuz we came to Kenya what are we supposed to do though things are looking bleak but danged this is a food review show and I am not giving in at this point I would even review an egg if I had two eggs bring them over hello sir chicken eggs hard-boiled or soft-boiled you take a look down 


what he's doing he's hit an egg with a spoon and he's kind of taking the shell off gently removing the show from the egg in such a way that the egg will no longer have a show on it and then he's gonna dice it in half so we have various options here for toppings guys it's not just an egg okay he's putting in some cuts and barring a bit of onion and tomato maybe cucumber a little bit of salt what's that one it's cheeky oh yeah okay good that's you do this how much is it for 120 okay you can keep this that's a hundo I think it's kind of fun dad not every episode works out so look at that we've got some salt - chili salt tomato it's kind of a Kenyan salsa oh here we go let's try it out a little refreshing salt to taste in there I like it we have all of sir in front of us and it's called an attachment yeah it's frozen this is like $50 of booyah we can't eat it so we're gonna get lunch for 20 cents you don't always get what you want in life same goes for this show as the Sun sets our frozen lobsters and that giant king fish hit the grill with no chance of cooking through anytime soon
